Apple has filed a patent for a walkie-talkie like device that would enable two people to chat securely over an ad-hoc wireless network.
The device, which appeared in a recently unearthed patent would be like a modern walkie-talkie with the added bonus of encrypted conversion.
The filing explains how a local network could be created between two people in close proximity, enabling discreet conversation in populated places.
Apple’s patent, which references a point-to-point ad hoc voice communication device, explains how existing walkie-talkies cannot provide the security of encrypted conversations.
The filing (via Wired) states: "A wireless communication device establishes voice communication between a supported user and a selected remote device supporting another user via a point-to-point wireless ad hoc network link.”
It also explains how the devices would automatically detect others in range, while there’d also be Bluetooth connectivity, noise filtering and the ability to control apps.
The company has not responded to requests for comment.
