'Real life Ex Machina' robot Sophia sweet talks audience speaking Mandarin at huge tech show


This life-like 'Ex Machina' style robot has wowed Chinese by speaking to them in their native tongue.
Humanoid Sophia introduces herself in English before switching to Mandarin to thank her hosts at one of the world's largest tech events.
At the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing Hanson Robotics, led by Dr David Hanson, brought its newest robot Sophia to life.
Her skin is made from silicon, and she can show more than 62 facial expressions, as well as being able to being bi-lingual.
Her appearance is reminiscent of Ava, the life-like robot from the Hollywood blockbuster Ex Machina.

She thanked her hosts in Mandarin after introducing herself in English
Cameras inside her eyes, combined with computer algorithms, allow her to see, follow faces, make eye-contact and recognize individuals.

A combination of Google Chrome voice recognition system and other technologies also enable Sophia to process speech, chat and get smarter over time.

The Chinese government issued a new guideline in April, aiming to triple the annual production of industrial robots to 100,000 by 2020, compared with fewer than 33,000 in 2015.
