WhatsApp said its aim was now to persuade the "other six billion" people to sign up.
To celebrate the milestone, WhatsApp provided these astonishing facts about its services:
- 42 billion messages are sent each day
- 1.6 billion photos are shared each day
- 250 million videos are shared each day
- There are 1 billion groups
